Dr. Steinert received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1977.

In 1981 he completed training in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. From that time onward, Dr. Steinert held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School, both on the full-time and part-time faculty until his recruitment to UC Irvine in 2004. Dr. Steinert holds positions as Vice Chairman of Clinical Ophthalmology, Director of Refractive, Cornea and Cataract Surgery, and Professor of Ophthalmology and Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Steinert's research interests center on optical disorders of the eye, spanning from cataract surgical technique and management of complications to refractive surgery and corneal transplantation. He is on the cutting edge of research on laser technology, most recently on the integration of wavefront technology into improving both primary refractive surgery and in therapeutic applications. He also is conducting projects on innovative IOL and corneal transplantation technologies, including the revolutionary use of lasers to perform intricate corneal transplantation incisions.
He has published over 120 peer-review journal articles, over 60 book chapters, and 4 textbooks, including the renowned Cataract Surgery, now in its Second Edition, with the Third Edition in preparation. He is named in both America's Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America in the three areas of cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery. He just completed his term as President of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and now is Program Chair of its annual meeting. He also sits on the editorial boards of 4 major peer-review journals and is an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Steinert’s community activities center on his commitment to the Boy Scouts of America, where he is currently an Assistant Scoutmaster.
