Specialty:  Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus

 

Dr. Jennifer Simpson has been at the UC Irvine Eye Institute since 2000, when she joined the faculty to become Chief of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus.   

 

Dr. Simpson, an Associate Professor, also serves as the Director of Residency Education for the Department of Ophthalmology.  She has been recognized as a “Physician of Excellence” by Orange Coast Magazine and a “Best Doctor” by the Best Doctor in America database. 

 

Dr. Simpson graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Kenyon College.  She obtained her medical degree from the University of Michigan in 1993, where she also was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.  She then completed her internship at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, followed by her residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City.  Dr. Simpson completed a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at the University of Michigan.  Following her fellowship, she joined the faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Michigan, where she specialized in pediatric ophthalmology until being recruited to the University of California, Irvine. 

 

Dr. Simpson's primary clinical interests and expertise are in the field of pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus, including medical and surgical treatment of pediatric strabismus (eye misalignment), congenital cataracts, pediatric tearing disorders, retinopathy of prematurity, as well as ocular genetics and congenital eye anomalies.  She sees patients at both the UC Irvine Campus and Medical Center locations.  She has been board certified in Ophthalmology since first becoming eligible in 1999.

 

Dr Simpson is dedicated to academic ophthalmology, both as a leader in residency education and in her research pursuits.  Current areas of research interest include ophthalmic genetics and the etiologies of amblyopia.
