The Official Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Internet Scavenger Hunt

Background

This tool was developed by Dr. Patricia Kokotailo at the University of Wisconsin as part of her "Alcohol and Other Drugs" curriculum. Residents who complete the assignment are rewarded with a small package of Chips Ahoy cookies.

Goals

  1. To allow you to become more familiar with alcohol, tobacco, and other drug resources and information available on the Internet
  2. To win valuable prizes for finding all of the correct answers!

Tasks

  1. Go to the Wisconsin Clearinghouse for Prevention Resources home page at http://www.uhs.wisc.edu/wch/, our University of Wisconsin Mecca for all things prevention. Now select "go to other web sites" and then to the "recovery" listing.
  2. Write down the First Step of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.
     
    Write down the 12th Step of the 12 Steps.
     
  3. Go back to the Wisconsin Clearinghouse Home Page and to the Legislative Update listing.
  4. Write down the bill number of the legislation enacted into law in the 1997-8 year that restricts the sale or giving away of cigarettes or tobacco products.  
  5. Now find the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System on the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Home Page (www.cdc.gov). Check under "Data and Statistics" and then "Surveillance".
  6. In 1997, what percent of high school students stated that in the past 30 days they had ridden with a driver who had been drinking alcohol?  
    In 1997, what percent of high school students stated that in the past 30 days they had used marijuana?  
    In 1997, what percent of high school students stated that in the past 30 days they had used alcohol?  
    From 1991-1995, did the percentage of high school students, both male and female, who smoked cigarettes in the past month rise, fall or stay the same?  
    What is the leading cause of death in the US for youth ages 5-24 years?  
  7. Now find the Monitoring the Future Study home page (www.nida.nih.gov) and the 1997 data results.
  8. What is the change for eighth graders' annual use of marijuana from 1991 to 1998?  
    What is the change for 12th graders' annual use of cocaine from 1991-1998?  
    What is the trend in perceived harmfulness of smoking marijuana regularly by 8th graders from 1997 to 1998 - up, down or level?  
    What is the general trend in perceived harmfulness of smoking marijuana regularly by eighth graders from 1991-1998 - up, down or level?  
    What is the general trend for use of any illicit drug by 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in 1997 - up, down or level?
