Located on the UC Irvine Campus, The Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic has forged an identity as a world center for laser studies and treatment. Established in 1982 as a non-profit corporation through the vision of inventor, businessman and philanthropist Arnold O. Beckman, Ph.D. and microbiologist Michael W. Berns Ph.D.
A "Center of Excellence for the Medical Application of Lasers" awarded by the Department of Energy. A "Center for Free Electron Laser-Related Biomedical Research" awarded in association with Stanford University by the Department of Defense. A "National Biotechnology Laser Research Resource, known as LAMMP", established by the National Institutes of Health.
