Course Description

BC212 is a graduate-level course in intracellular signal transduction offered in the Spring quarter. This course fulfills the requirements for an elective in the MBGB graduate (PhD) program. BC212 is offered every other (odd) year in the Spring quarter. BC212 will be taught by Professors Krolewski, Steele and Waterman. Students in the MBG&B program may take this course in their first year of graduate study (as well as any year thereafter). Requirements for the course include successful completion of the required MBGB core courses or permission of the course coordinator (Spring quarter core courses may be taken concurrently with this elective).

Course Goal

The goal of the course will be to give students in-depth exposure to the current research literature on mechanisms of intracellular signaling, with particular emphasis on the regulation of cell division and cell death in normal and neoplastic cells.

Schedule

The class will meet in the Spring quarter of odd years on Mondays and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. -12:00 N in room D240 Medical Sciences I (Biological Chemistry Conference Room), on the College of Medicine campus.

Format

In general, each topic will be covered in a lecture on Monday (students are expected to read the appropriate review articles) followed by a discussion session on Friday, which will consist of a detailed discussion/critique of one to three relevant papers. Every student is expected to attend ALL lectures and discussion sections, read the assigned papers and prepare for, and participate in, the discussion sections.

Exams and Grading

Letter grades will be given on the basis of attendance, participation in the discussion sections and a single in-class exam during finals week. Click to view a PDF version of a sample final exam (2007)
