"We cloak medical education and clinical practice in the robes of science, pretending that objectivity guides our practice. But medicine is more art than science. The humanities provide a forum for appreciating the subjectivity of treating human beings who look nothing like what the textbooks describe. The secret of the care of the patient is not in a test tube full of blood or an EKG, but as Francis Peabody reminds us, the secret is in caring for the patient."
