As medical schools begin to embrace the philosophy of multidisciplinary integrated cmricula in delivering medical education, the challenge of designing valid and reliable evaluation methods is gaining priority. No longer are pure paper tests of knowledge sufficient to assess learners' ability to communicate and apply clinical reasoning and content areas to practice cases and to issues of population health. In both preclinical and clinical cmricula, these competencies are all relevant to meeting the health care needs of individuals and communities in contemporary practice.

The symposium theme, Evaluation in Undergraduate Medical Education: Current Concepts, addresses the need for educators to be aware of a variety of testing tools. With a wealth of research outcomes now available to demonstrate the validity and reliability ofvarious evaluation instruments, we can select assessment methods that truly measure the competencies we aim to achieve in our learners. Workshops and small group breakouts will follow the plenary sessions, to apply information offered in a focused setting and allow interdisciplinary discussion. This symposium is offered for all faculty involved in health professions education.
