Students can pursue advanced training in several graduate programs in
biomedical sciences within the College of Medicine. These are listed below
.
The University of California, Irvine (UCI), through its Medical
Scientist Training Program (MSTP), offers a dual track for the M.D.
and Ph.D. degrees to exceptionally well qualified students who wish to
pursue research careers in the biomedical sciences. The program combines
educational experiences in clinical disciplines and in basic medical research,
culminating in both an M.D. degree from the College of Medicine and a
Ph.D. degree from one of the participating graduate programs. The aim
of this program is to train medical scientists who will use research for
the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Students
who complete the program will be well prepared to assume leadership roles
in the medical sciences.
The Department of Community and Environmental Medicine provides a multidisciplinary
program including the knowledge necessary and appropriate to teach and/or
conduct basic and applied research in areas relating to the entry, distribution,
biotransformation and mechanism of action of chemical agents harmful to
the body.

UCI offers a multidisciplinary graduate program under the general heading
of Molecular Biology, Genetics & Biochemistry (MBGB). Within this program,
there are several areas of concentration or "tracks" that offer outstanding
research opportunities in the areas of Biomedical Informatics, Cancer
Biology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology & Genetics, Immunology &
Pathogenesis, Mechanisms of Gene Expression, Neurobiology, Structural
Biology & Molecular Biophysics and Virology.
The Department of Pharmacology offers a broad-based multidisciplinary
graduate program focused on neuroscience and cardiovascular pharmacology.
The goal is to provide a first class training in pharmacology that will
open up a wide range of employment opportunities upon graduation.

The Division of Human Genetics in the College of Medicine's Department
of Pediatrics offers graduate education leading to the Master of Science
degree in Genetic Counseling. Graduates of the program are prepared to
function as members of genetics teams engaged in providing clinical services,
teaching, and research.
