The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) offers a three-year accredited Residency Programs for applicants who have completed a one-year internship. The physicians who specialize in PM&R are called physiatrists. They treat a multitude of musculoskeletal and neurological problems with the goal of restoring optimal function to people. They utilize a host of approaches such as drugs, assistive devices, hot and cold therapies, electrotherapies, massage, biofeedback, traction and therapeutic exercise.

The Residency Programs has 15 residents: 5 first-year, 5 second-year, and 5 third-year. It is a combined program between UCI Medical Center, Long Beach Veterans Administration Medical Center, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and is directed by Patricia W. Nance, M.D., Chief of Rehabilitation Services at LBVAMC.
