Welcome to the Department of Radiation Oncology

The Department of Radiation Oncology offers a wide range of advanced radiation therapy procedures. We are located within the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UCI Medical Center in Orange, CA, the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center in Orange County. The department in collaboration with other specialties (e.g. surgical and medical oncology) provides clinical care in a multi-disciplinary setting as well as education and research programs including community education.

Radiation Oncology generally refers to the treatment of cancers using radiation. Worldwide, most radiation treatment of cancer is performed using x-rays or electrons (small sub-atomic particles). Treatment can also involve placing small amounts of material which radiate x-rays or electrons or other particles directly into the tumorous areas.

Here at the UCI Department of Radiation Oncology the radiation oncologists utilize patient X-ray, CT, CT-PET, and MRI scans along with state-of-the-art treatment planning computers to attack tumors with the most advanced linear accelerators available, including the NOMOS PEACOCK/CORVUS conformal therapy system. Learn more about our advanced planning and treatment systems in the CLINICAL section.

Undergoing any cancer treatment can be a trying time for any patient. In our department we strive to make every patient in our care as comfortable as possible. To help patients understand what radiation treatments are like, we have included a short description in the CLINICAL section. It includes pictures and descriptions of the entire treatment process from the initial meeting with our Radiation Oncologists to lying on a treatment table. Please, also visit the STAFF section where you can view the names, faces, and credentials of the people in the department.

The RESEARCH section details our department's research programs in Radiation Biology and Medical Physics. Understanding the biological processes of cancer enables the design of better cancer treatment. Advances in physics research provide more effective methods of treatment delivery.
