Academics : Research
The research mission of the department is to develop outstanding research programs in genetics, stress, schizophrenia, depression, brain imaging, clinical trials and basic science studies of neuropsychiatric disorders and aging. Departmental research efforts have markedly expanded over the past five years, both with respects to the amounts of NIH funding and the overall quality of the research. In terms of research dollars per FTE the department is ranked in the top 4% of the 123 departments of psychiatry and has been ranked #1 over the past two years for the 72 publicly funded medical school psychiatry departments.

Residents in Research
For the resident, this wealth of resources provides an extraordinary opportunity to learn a wide range of psychiatric techniques and to interact with world renowned faculty. Weekly lecture series and luncheon meetings are held for the dissemination and discussion of new findings in psychiatry. Furthermore, the Department strongly encourages residents to pursue research throughout their residencies with members of the department or scientists in other departments in the University.
