Residency Life: Orange County Living
Nearly three million Americans call Orange County home and boast of its incomparable combination of lifestyle, economy, and climate. The OC is comprised of more than 30 cities of varied nature from historic (City of Orange) to master-planned (Irvine) to coastal (Huntington, Newport, Laguna) centered between San Diego one hour to the south and Los Angeles one hour to the north. The area offers seemingly endless opportunities for cultural, entertainment, dining, and recreational exploration.

Psychiatry residents at UCI choose to live in various locations based on issues of cost, ease of commute, or proximity to the coast or to family/friends. Current residents live throughout the area in the City of Orange, Fullerton, Irvine, Huntington Beach, Long Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Mission Viejo, etc.  Residents do not have difficulty finding housing they can afford on a resident salary.

Nearby attractions abound and include Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, the Verizon Ampitheater for concerts, professional sports venues, The Irvine Spectrum, multiple museums and zoos, the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Balboa Island, Big Bear Mountain ski resort, etc. There is nightlife to be found at restaurants and clubs throughout the OC especially along the coast or, if venturesome, about an hour away in Hollywood or along the Sunset Strip.

Families appreciate some of the highest neighborhood safety and school test score reports of the state, and of the nation, and the job market is also one of the largest in the nation

The list of OC highlights and choices would fill the pages of this website, and, therefore, for more information on the area we refer you to the worldwide web and such sites as www.orangecounty-living.com. One point to keep in mind when interviewing for and selecting a residency is location, location, location; the OC offers so many choices and such beautiful weather year round, its residents can truly take advantage.

"As Californian as one can be, I am about as biased as one can be about our opportunities and quality of life in Orange County. It is truly difficult to beat. I routinely give the following two points of advice to applicants choosing between residencies: Look for leadership that is flexible and dynamic--a program director who, you believe based on impressions and testimonies, would likely keep your interests in mind when making decisions for one and for all; and, look for a location you will enjoy every moment of your free time."
