We are fortunate to have access to a multitude of clinical sites, all offering unique experiences to round out the resident's experience.

University of California, Irvine Medical Center
UCI Medical Center is the only university hospital in Orange County that offers acute- and general-care service. It has the county's only Level I trauma center, American College of Surgeons-verified regional burn center and National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center. Included in its University Children's Hospital is the county's most sophisticated neonatal unit, caring for more than 500 premature and at-risk infants a year. UCI Medical Center was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals¨ by Solucient, a leading source of health-care business intelligence. It is one of three California hospitals and 15 major teaching hospitals to receive this award.

We are very pleased to announce that University of California, Irvine Medical Center is one of only 59 hospitals nationally to be named to the "Leapfrog Top Hospitals" list for quality and safety.  The Leapfrog Group is an independent consortium of Fortune 500 companies that is focused on the public reporting of quality, safety and affordability of healthcare so that consumers can make informed healthcare decisions.


Veterans Affairs Long Beach Healthcare System
The VA health care facilities provide a broad spectrum of medical, surgical and rehabilitative care. The VA is used annually by approximately 75 percent of all disabled and low-income veterans and it manages the largest medical education and health professions training program in the United States. VA's medical system serves as a backup to the Defense Department during national emergencies and as a federal support organization during major disasters.


St. Joseph's Hospital
St. Joseph's continues to maintain over the last 70 years a truly patient-centered care system while introducing the latest medical devices and techniques. Located within one mile of UCIMC, St. Joseph's provides exposure for the residents in the care of patients in a private setting.


Orange County Behavioral Health Services

Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) provides rehabilitative mental health services and episodic treatment services which emphasize individual needs, strengths, choices, and involvement in service planning and implementation. Adults who have a serious and persistent mental disorder and impairment in their ability to function in the community or who have a history of recurring substantial functional impairment, hospitalization, or symptoms can access services. Services include assessment, evaluation, collateral therapy, individual and group therapy, medication support, rehabilitation, linkage and consultation, placement, plan development, crisis intervention and specialized residential services.  Dr. Donald Sharps MD, Associate Medical Director, provides formal case supervision and guidance to our residents as they provide community mental health services up to one day a week during their fourth year.

 


Mental Health Association
The Mental Health Association (MHA) has three outpatient clinics --Garden Grove, Costa Mesa and Santa Ana-- dedicated in the rehabilitation and treatment of mentally ill patients. The Santa Ana clinic treats homeless patients with chronic mental illness.


Student Health Center at University of California, Irvine

The Student Health Center is located on the main campus of the University of California, Irvine.  The Student Health Center is the primary site of service for undergraduate students' medical care for USHIP students.  In addition to primary care and medical specialty service, there is a Mental Health Service/Clinic.  Residents have the opportunity to participate in a multidisciplinary clinic at this location during their fourth year.  The Mental Health Clinic is compromised of psychiatrists, psychologists and masters-level therapists.  In this clinic you will diagnosis and treat a wide variety of mental health problems in the undergraduate population via medication management and/or individual psychotherapy.  Vivien Chan, M.D., Chief of Mental Health Service, is a direct supervisor for residents during this experience.  This is a highly sought after opportunity in a dynamic young population with excellent one-on-one supervision.


Royale TRC
Royale TRC provides long-term psychiatric treatment for the indigent and chronic, persistent mentally ill of Orange County. Staffed by UCI faculty, Royale TRC provides an excellent teaching opportunity for the residents in the care of the chronic mentally ill in a long-term setting.
