Child/Adolescent Fellowship : Didactics

UCI provides a rich didactic experience with a minimum of eight hours weekly taught by specialists in their area of instruction.

Child & Adolescent Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry

Relevant readings and case conference regarding issues in pediatric consultation.  Occurs 1 hour weekly for 8 weeks.

Instructor:  Alan Hanft, M.D.; Board-Certified General, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Journal Club

Reading, presentation, and review of selected classic and contemporary articles with group discussion.  Discuss essential journals and strategies for “keeping up” with the literature.  Occurs 1 hour weekly for 48 weeks.

Instructor:  Lee Gislason, M.D.; Board-Certified General, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

Mock Oral Exams

Practice for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Oral Board Examinations.  Taught by Board Certified Child Psychiatrists.

Cross-Cultural Psychiatry

Focused readings and discussion of cultural, religious, and spiritual influences on symptom presentation, family interaction, and interaction with health systems and with physicians. Specific cultures are presented and representatives from each are invited to discuss their experiences and cultural identities.  Occurs 1.5 hours weekly for 40 weeks; taught biyearly.

DSM-IV Review using the Biopsychosocial Model

Comprehensive DSM-IV analysis focusing on childhood disorders, stressing complex cases and development of a treatment plan based on the biopsychosocial model.  Epidemiology, treatment models, and system-based practice are emphasized. Occurs 2 hours weekly for 8 weeks; taught biyearly.

Family Therapy

Focused reading and discussion of family therapy covering major theoretical frameworks.  Actual cases are seen ensemble giving opportunity for fellows to both observe and participate in family therapy.  Both inpatient and outpatient family therapy cases are seen.  Occurs 1.5 hours weekly for 30 weeks biyearly.

Forensic Consultation and Ethics

Focused readings, presentations, and discussions of both the consultative process and typical problems in forensic child psychiatry.  Material is spread over two years so as not to repeat.Occurs 1 hour weekly for 12-14 weeks.

Instructor:  Jose Moral, M.D.; Board Certified in General, Child & Adolescent, and Forensic Psychiatry

 General Psychiatry Journal Club

Review and interactive discussion of pertinent articles covering a variety of topics in the field of psychiatry. Occurs 1 hour biweekly for 48 weeks.

Presenters:  Rotating faculty members and residents.

Grand Rounds

General lectures and or case discussions by visiting and guest lecturers on a variety of topics relating to both child and general psychiatry.  Occurs 1 hour biweekly for 48 weeks.

Mental Retardation and Autistic Spectrum Disorders

Case presentations and interactive discussion regarding diagnosis and treatment of individuals with mental retardation and Autistic Spectrum Disorders.  Topics include comorbidity, family systems, educational issues, and multidisciplinary approach to care.  1 hour weekly for 26 weeks.

Neuropsychiatry

Review of neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, and psychiatry basics with emphasis on Board Examination and PRITE preparation.  Occurs 1 hour weekly for 48 weeks.

Instructor:  Peter Farrell, D.O.

Psychodynamic Play Therapy and Child Development

Observation and interactive process discussion of long-term play therapy with child patient.  Topics include physical development, sexual development, cognitive development, emotional development and moral development.  Occurs 1.5 hours weekly for 40 weeks.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Focused reading, presentations, discussions, and patient interview with focus on psychodynamic and psychoanalytic principals guiding treatment and case management.  Occurs 1 hour weekly for 48 weeks.

Instructor:  Mark Markowitz, M.D.; Board Certified in General, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Psychological Testing

Review and presentation of commonly used psychological tests to evaluate children and adolescents.  Occurs 1 hour weekly for 4 weeks

Instructor:  Clinical Neuropsychologist

Review of Child & Adolescent Practice Parameters

Reading and discussion of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Practice Parameters as published by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  Occurs 1 hour weekly for 8 weeks

School Consultation

Focused reading, presentations, and discussions on the consultation-liaison process in the school setting and understanding federal and state guidelines for academic testing and special education. Material is spread over two years so as not to repeat.  Occurs 1 hour weekly for 6 weeks.
