UCI Medical Center:

UCI Medical Center (UCIMC) is a 462-bed comprehensive medical care center and is the principal facility of the UCI College of Medicine. The following services are provided: Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Pathology, Radiology, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Anesthesiology, and PM&R. The Center has Cardiac, Neonatal, Respiratory, Burn, and Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Units and more than 90 specialty outpatient clinics. It is the designated countywide Level I tertiary trauma referral center.

The Department of PM&R at UCIMC provides inpatient, consultation, electrodiagnostic, and outpatient service. PM&R is also responsible for the professional direction of the physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and PM&R psychology sections. PM&R has  four board-certified physiatrists at UCIMC, including the Chair of the Department and 37 therapists.

The inpatient service consists of 14 beds. The Department operates the PM&R and Prosthetic clinics. Consultation services are provided for patients on other services of UCIMC and at other area hospitals. Electrodiagnostic service provides electrodiagnostic and electromyographic testing for in- and outpatients. Departmental facilities include six laboratory areas for faculty research.

First-year residents (PG2) at UCIMC are assigned to the inpatient service. Under close supervision of the attending physicians, each PG2 takes care of about 10 patients. The attending physician makes daily rounds. Supervised by faculty, the residents are in charge of team conferences and the family education conference.

Under supervision of attending physicians, the senior residents at UCIMC are responsible for the consultations and EMGs requested by other services in the hospital and other hospitals in the community. Residents also manage the team conferences for the patients seen in consultation.

All of the residents at UCIMC attend Chief's Rounds, teaching conferences, and Journal Club.
