Pediatric Clerkship
- Welcome
- On behalf of the faculty, staff, and residents of the UCI Department of Pediatrics, welcome to the Pediatrics Clerkship.
You will find yourself challenged with a rich variety of interesting and demanding problems. Pediatricians take care of
sick children, but also are practitioners of disease prevention and health maintenance from the first days of life
through young adulthood. Behavioral and developmental issues within the context of the family and school are as
significant as organ system disorders.
The purpose of this clerkship is to provide you with the following: a solid core of pediatric knowledge and skills,
an appreciation of the spectrum of growth and development, and a logical approach to the care of children in both illness
and health, which can be applied in whatever field of medicine you enter.
While the faculty and residents will provide guidance, stimulation, and example, ultimately you are the main ingredient
in making this experience a successful one. Be curious, ask questions, and find answers to them. Take time to talk and
play with your patients as well as to examine them. Get to know them. Listen to your patients' parents. We hope that you
will use your capacity for empathy to develop a sense of what it is like to be a child in today's world. And we hope that
you will always be an advocate for children in your profession, your family, and your community.
