Pulmonology - Introduction

Dan M. Cooper, M.D.
Division Chief

Pediatric Pulmonology is one of the newest and most exciting of the pediatric subspecialties. Originally conceived as primarily founded subspecialty in the mid to late 1970's, it became quickly apparent that the need for expertise in clinical management of diseases such a cystic fibrosis, congenital pulmonary disorder, severe asthma, and chronic lung disease associated with prematurity was so great that a clinically based subspecialty soon became a reality.

Technical advances also influenced the development of the subspecialty including:

• Flexible pediatric bronchoscopy
• Measurement of gas exchange during exercise on
  a breath by breath basis
• Sophisticated approaches to the assessment of sleep
• New modalities for imaging the lung

All in all, pediatric pulmonology remains a rapidly moving subspecialty in which clinical applications are closely tied to scientific discovery.
