Physiology & Biophysics Postdoctoral Program
The Department is composed of a highly multidisciplinary group of internationally
recognized scientists working at the forefront of biomedical research. As a result,
postgraduate training opportunities abound in a host of disciplines. Faculty members have
a long and successful track record of training postgraduate fellows for biomedical
research careers in both academia and private industry. UCI is a top-tier research
institution ideally situated in the heart of the fastest growing region of California.
Southern California has extensive employment opportunities in the many regional colleges
and universities as well as in its rapidly expanding biotechnology industry. Additionally,
Irvine and other Orange County cities offer highly diverse cultural and leisure activities
and excellent public schools. Further information regarding housing and cultural aspects
of living in the UCI area can be found at the following links:
For further information on projects and available postdoctoral opportunities, contact
the individual faculty member.
Physiology & Biophysics Graduate Program
The Department provides numerous opportunities for graduate students interested in
pursuing Ph.D.-level training. The Department is one of the seven core academic
departments participating in the interdisciplinary Molecular Biology,
Genetics & Biochemistry program at UCI. In addition, opportunities exist for
students in a variety of other graduate programs at UCI as numerous faculty members hold
joint appointments in departments ranging from Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and
Materials Science, Materials Science and Engineering, and the Interdepartmental Neuroscience
Program. Students currently enrolled in a graduate program at UCI should contact
individual faculty members to learn about specific graduate training opportunities in each
laboratory. Faculty members also actively participate in the Medical Scientist Training
Program within the UCI School of Medicine and a number of M.D./Ph.D. students have
trained or are in training under faculty mentors.
Medical School Teaching
The faculty in Physiology and Biophysics are also actively involved in teaching
medical students. The Medical Physiology course provides coverage of fundamental aspects
of human physiology and thereby is a vital part of the curriculum for first year medical
students. Medical Physiology sets the stage for understanding pathology and pharmacology
and provides the framework that will be used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Students have selected Medical Physiology for the Best Basic Science Course
Award nine out of the past ten years. Members of our department have been selected
by the students for numerous individual teaching awards.
