Physiology & Biophysics Research Facilities
Most departmental laboratories and associated instrumentation are located in the Medical Sciences I complex and adjacent Irvine Hall. The labs contain a wide variety of equipment for research in molecular and cellular physiology and molecular biophysics. Knowledgeable users can help investigators in the Department exploit this equipment for their projects.

Microscopy: fluorescence, ratiometric calcium imaging, confocal. (Cahalan, Chandy, Hall labs)

Electrophysiology and cell microinjection: patch clamp, microelectrode recording (oocyte) setups. (Cahalan, Chandy, Hall labs)

Molecular biology: protein (HPLC, FRLC) and nucleic acid work (electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, PCR, electroporation, gel photography); programs for analyzing protein and DNA sequences and for molecular visualization. (most labs)

Mass spectrometry: quadrupole-orthogonal-time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometer (QSTAR XL, Applied Biosystems/MDS Sciex) which can be coupled to both electrospray (ESI) and MALDI ionization sources for protein and peptide analysis and their posttranslational modifications using either 1-dimentional or 2-dimensional liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. (Huang lab)

Optical spectroscopy: Absorbance, fluorescence, step-scan FTIR, and circular dichroism. (Longmuir, Vickery, White labs)

Physicochemical characterization: Differential scanning calorimetry, isothermal titration calorimetry, static and dynamic light scattering, BiaCore surface plasmon resonance. (Longmuir, Vickery, White labs)

Dark room: Automated film developer and print maker.

Library: The Department maintains the previous three to five years of major journals in physiology, biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and cell biology, as well as journals of broad scientific interest, and reference books. Computers provide free access to on-line publications.

Machine shop: The Department maintains a shop with milling machine and lathe for hands-on fabrication of chambers or other devices.
