Graduate Financial Support

Generally, students will receive full tuition and stipend support throughout their tenure as a graduate student as long as they remain in good academic standing. For 2000-2001, the graduate student stipend is $18,500 plus fees. Support may come from University funds, individual fellowships, training grants, research grants, and teaching assistantships. Prestigious Regents' Fellowships are available to students of exceptional promise in their first year of graduate study. Because University of California tuition rates are substantially higher for out-of-state residents, out-of-state students will be asked to become California residents after their first year.

Applications from foreign students (students who are not US citizens or permanent residents) are welcomed, but because of limitations on the sources of financial support available for foreign students, it is likely that only a small number of positions can be offered to foreign applicants each year. Foreign applicants who do not require financial support should make sure to indicate this on the application form.
