Clinical Interests

Dr. Monk's clinical interests are in the areas of women's health, gynecologic cancers, prevention and screening, and the carcinogenesis of cervical cancer. Dr. Monk's clinical expertise highly qualifies him to perform a full array of operative procedures, including radical pelvic operations as well as intestinal and urologic procedures. Dr. Monk is also credited for advancing issues of Quality of Life (QOL) research in the national Gynecologic Oncology Group to a rigorous and respectable level. Dr. Monk has become well regarded by QOL investigators throughout the country as a physician researcher who can capably address the multidimensional aspects of QOL research in cancer care.

Dr. Monk's other contributions to the field of gynecologic oncology include important preliminary work on the role of surgical membranes in the prevention of postoperative adhesions after radical surgery.

Research Interests

Dr. Monk's research interests are focused on the following areas:

1. Chemotherapy in ovarian and cervical cancer
2. Etiology, clinical significance, and prevention of pelvic adhesions post radical pelvic surgery
3. Treatment of invasive cervical cancer
4. Biomarkers in gynecologic cancers
5. Human Papillomavirus
6. Quality-of-life (QOL) in cancer care
