Fellowship Program

The Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship program at the University of California, Irvine, is a highly clinical program. The training takes place at two principal institutions: the University of California Irvine Medical Center and Long Beach Memorial Woman's Hospital. This program, like all other programs in 1997, will be expanding to three years. It is our intention to maintain the emphasis on hands-on care of high risk pregnant patients. The curriculum is currently being developed for that three-year program and, as per the requirements of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 18 months of the three years will be spent in research. Opportunities exist in molecular biology, infectious disease, and in epidemiologic research. In addition, we are currently in the process of developing a program for attaining a master's degree in public health during the fellowship. However, every effort will be made to continue the concentration on clinical teaching. The Department has a large volume of high risk obstetric patients and, as such, the fellow gains experience, especially in the first year, in managing these patients, both in the ambulatory and inpatient setting. In subsequent years the training focuses on fetal diagnosis through ultrasound and genetics and fetal therapy, as well as all of the other important clinical areas of Maternal Fetal Medicine.
