Thank you for your interest in our residency program; we are quite proud of what we have to offer. In addition to providing comprehensive training in emergency medicine, we have a core group of faculty who are dedicated to the production of the best-trained emergency physician.

The University of California, Irvine, Emergency Medicine Residency is a three-year training program with a PGY I, II, III configuration. The program was approved by the Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine in February 1989, and fully re-accredited in 1992, 1996 and 1999. In 2005, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has granted full accreditation for the maximum term of 5 years to the UC Irvine Emergency Medicine Residency. The program accepts six residents per year; we receive approximately 450 applications.

The University of California, Irvine Department of Emergency Medicine is a true department within both the medical school and hospital. This allows us to offer a dynamic training program; any rotations that provide less than optimal training are changed to maximize education.  Our residents provide continual feedback to ensure that they are well treated on all rotations and that they have the optimum potential for education.

UCI is Orange County's only level-1 trauma center and has the only American College of Surgeons certified burn center in Orange County; both of these augment the training. UCI medical center offers the perfect hybrid between a county and university hospital; the overall clinical experience at UCI is consistently rated very highly by our residents. Our residents leave our program with the confidence to treat all disease etiologies and are prepared to work in any ED.
Our formal didactic program follows a modular curriculum which is composed of eighteen, month-long modules and is repeated twice during the three year residency cycle. We augment the training with weekly morbidity and mortality conferences, EKG rounds, X-ray/visual diagnosis sessions, and procedure conferences. Emergency Ultrasound is fully integrated into our curriculum and clinical practice.

Research is fully supported by the department and every resident must complete a research project prior to completing their training. This research is sponsored by a faculty member who helps the resident navigate the project through the IRB and all of the research phases. In addition, any research expenses are covered by the department, including mailing costs, statistical consulting, poster production, and resident travel expenses to present their research at our regional and national meetings.

Every summer our residents are excused from clinical duties for three days to attend our residency retreat in the mountains of Lake Arrowhead. This retreat gives residents and faculty important time to bond in a social setting, while providing the residency with valuable input to further strengthen our residency.

We look forward to receiving your application.
