University of California, Irvine: Emergency Medicine Department

There are numerous shuttle services that will take you to UC-Irvine Medical Center in Orange. Be careful not to confuse your destination with the UC-Irvine Campus which is in Irvine. Los Angeles International Airport take the 405 freeway South (approximately 20 miles). Then turn off onto the 22 freeway East. Get off the freeway (approximately 15 miles) at The City Drive. Proceed to Chapman and make a Left Turn (the hospital should be on your right). At the next light (S. Manchester Ave.), make a left. Our building (200 S. Manchester) will be on your right. Turn right into the first driveway. Please park in a parking stall labeled "D" or staff parking. You will then pick up a parking voucher from the security guard in the front lobby. Complete the parking voucher in ink and place it on the dashboard of your car.

Please Note: The UCIMC is located in Orange, approximately 12 miles from the undergraduate campus in Irvine.

John Wayne International Airport is the closest to the Medical Center and is the recommended arrival destination. An alternative is Los Angeles International also known as LAX. This alternative may be cheaper depending on arrival and departure times. However, the drive to the medical center is approximately 45 minutes in perfect traffic (more commonly 1 1/2 hours). There are rental car agencies at both airports.

Most students stay with family and friends in the area. Our residents have offered to interviewees a place to stay especially to students coming from the same medical school that they attended (see resident list). Please Park in the parking lot adjacent to 200 S. Manchester. We request that you park only in staff parking, sections “D,” in the 200 Manchester parking lot. The meeting place: 200, 7th floor, Suite 710, located one block from UCIMC at 200 Manchester St., Orange, CA 92868. Park only in spaces designated "D," then pick up a parking voucher from Security Personnel at the desk in the lobby. This voucher must be completed in ink and displayed on the dashboard of your car.

Interviews take place Wednesday morning and afternoon. The day starts off with a continental breakfast and coffee at 7:00 am. The residency director will give a concise overview of emergency medicine and the UC-Irvine philosophies. You will be interviewed by residents, the residency director, the associate residency director, and attending faculty. A tour of the ED will be given by the residents. Lunch is provided. This is immediately followed by conference. We recommend staying for the first few hours (12:00 pm - 2:00 pm). This will give you an opportunity to meet all of the residents, since conference is mandatory. You will also be exposed to the weekly educational program. Interviewees are invited to stay for the entire conference (5:00 pm) if they wish, and some have even stayed to observe in the emergency department after conference ends.
