The main teaching hospital for the program is UCI Medical Center, a 462 bed, full service university hospital which is the primary teaching center for the UCI College of Medicine. The UCI ED, a Level I trauma center which serves over 3 million people, treats over 46,000 patients annually. The 12,000 square foot modern department was built in 1981 and has 35 beds including four resuscitation suites, an urgent care center, paramedic base station, and a chest pain unit. Renovations are near completion for expanded patient waiting areas and improved security measures for staff safety. The UC Irvine Medical Center offers a full range of primary, secondary, and tertiary care services. It offers numerous highly specialized services including the Regional Burn Center, the UCLA/UCI Transplant Center, the Comprehensive Seizure Center, Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Antoci Center for Pediatric Urology and Nephrology, Transplant, Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant Program, Renal Transplant Program, UCI Sleep Disorders Center, and the General Clinical Research Center.

UCI Medical Center is the only Level I Trauma Center in the county, caring for

approximately 150 major trauma patients per month. A Mercy Air helicopter service supports the activities of the emergency department. All major medical and surgical specialties are available for back-up and consultation. Residents from all specialties rotate through the department, as well as medical students, nursing students, and paramedic students. Fifteen board certified emergency medicine faculty serve as attending staff twenty-four hours a day, along with twelve part-time faculty. The residents spend 31 of 36 months at UCI Medical Center. The other five months are spent at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and the adjacent Miller Children's Hospital, both located approximately 20 miles away.

Long Beach Memorial Medical Center

Both hospitals provide excellent ancillary staff to maximize resident learning; UCI was recently designated a Magnet Center for Nursing Excellence, one of only four in California. The 1998 JCAHO results for each hospital were 98 for UCI and 96 for Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. These scores attest to the strength of our training facilities!
