UCI is a fully autonomous Department of Emergency Medicine. Emergency Medicine faculty are actively involved with the hospital medical staff. In addition, the faculty are heavily involved in medical school affairs, and professional associations such as the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and the California chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Clinical research is strongly emphasized, and each resident is required to undertake and complete a research project while in training. Each resident will be expected to join The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), The Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA), The Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), and The Society of Orange County Emergency Physicians (SOCEP). These memberships afford the residents journal subscriptions, discounted conference fees, and several worthwhile newsletters which provide information on the growth and development of the specialty.
