PREREQUISITES: Permission of Course Director and the Faculty Mentor. Prequisites for UCI students is 3rd Year standing and 4th Year standing for all extramural students.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The objective of this course is to provide a guided research experience in the Department of Emergency Medicine. The student will learn the process of submitting the different categories of IRB proposals. The student should acquire an appreciation for the value of a well developed research project, learn to critically read the medical literature, do a comprehensive literature search, online medical literature retrieval, use the internet/medical search tools/websites, and to develop the project to a final goal and likely publication. The student will learn to develop a project, learn the process of obtaining IRB approval and steps required to preparing an abstract for submission and presentation at a regional or national Emergency Medicine.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Provides an opportunity for the medical students to participate in the Research Programs in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Individual faculty members will sponsor and supervise research projects jointly developed by the individual students and the faculty member. Credit and duration of each project will be variable, based upon the amount of time the student wishes to devote to the project.

EVALUATION METHODOLOGY: Continuous guidance and feedback will be given throughout the rotation from the faculty advisor. the students will receive more extensive feedback from their faculty advisor halfway during the course and also receive an end of rotation evaluation. The student can also meet with the Course Director at any time for further feedback.
