Requirements for Passing the Rotation

1.  ASSIGNED SHIFTS.  Satisfactory completion of shifts is required to pass the rotation and prompt attendance is required.

2.      STUDENT ORIENTATION. Attendance is required and you must review the orientation video before you arrive.  Orientation will start promptly at 9:00 AM on the first Monday of your rotation and will last 1-2 hours.

3. STUDENT LECTURES. Student lectures will be arranged by the Course Director (see your individual rotation schedule for specific times and locations). Please note that student lecture attendance and participation is required and will be reflected in your final grade. Lecture location will be in Bldg. 1A, ED Conference room next to Trauma Room A.
 

4.  ASSIGNED READING.  Irma will issue you a book for your reading assignments.  The book will be returned at the end of your rotation.  If you fail to return the book you will be expected to pay for the book.  Also, do not write in the book.  The books are for all students rotating  through the ED. Your final exam will be an on-line exam.  Irma will issue you an access code along with your password on first day of Orientation.  You will be expected to take the exam on or before your last shift of your rotation.

5. SHIFT EVALUATION. During each shift, give the R3 or the attending you worked with an evaluation form.  You will work most closely with the R3 in the main ED and the attending in ED3.  On your ED3 shifts you will work directly with the attending.  If you work with an R3 more than one time, it might not be necessary to have them re-evaluate you.  In such a case please indicate that on your day’s evaluation and you can place that directly into the evaluation box. 

6.    PATIENT LOG.  A complete patient log of all patients seen should be kept and turned in prior to completion of the rotation.  This is required to pass the rotation. 

7. HONORS GRADE.  Honors Grade will be given for superior performance (top 15%) based on their clinical performance, online exam score, conference participation, and a power point case presentation. The power point case presentation will require an appropriate review of the literature and must be completed before the end of the rotation.  If you will do a case presentation, it is preferable to present it first during the student lecture time slot to the course director and then it can subsequently be presented to R3s or attending during the rotation.  The Course Director is available by email or in person to help you prepare for the case presentation.  All presentations must be e-mailed to the Course Director for credit.

8. ATTIRE.  Your white coat, student ID and stethoscope are required at all times. Shirts/ties for males and slacks or skirts for females are preferred but clean hospital scrubs under your white coat are optional.

9. WEEKLY RESIDENT CONFERENCE. Wednesday conference is from Noon – 5PM and attendance is optional but encouraged. You are excused from clinical duties if you wish to attend. The location is in Bldg. 1A, ED Conference Room and the schedule is available from Irma.

10. JOURNAL CLUB.  Held usually during the 3rd Thursday of the month.   (Refer to your rotation schedule for date).  Attendance is encouraged and please let Irma know if you would like to attend.

11. Rotation Feedback. The Course Director is available and encourages every student to meet with him during and immediately after the rotation to go over their progress and overall clerkship evaluation.  Please let Irma know if you are interested in such a meeting.

12. ROTATION EVALUATION.  Dr. Lotfipour will give you an end of the rotation evaluation for you to fill out.  Return filled out evaluation to Dr. Lotfipour or Irma.  We appreciate your feedback and take it very seriously for future improvements.  You will have the opportunity of selecting the faculty and resident that contributed most to learning during your shifts on this rotation evaluation.  These persons will be recognized by a plaque at the end of the year resident graduation.

13. ROTATION EXAM. The rotation exam is required prior to completion of the rotation. It is an online exam and can be taken from any computer. Your ID number and password will be given to you by Irma at the beginning of the rotation. To take the exam log on to www.saemtests.com, click on ‘Take Me To The Tests’, click on “General Test”. It will then ask you to type in your ID Number and your Password, the test consists of 25 questions. Please follow the website instructions. You have the option to take some Practice Tests before starting. If you have any difficulties please refer to the online help section at the site and then subsequently contact Irma.

GRADING CRITERIA

1.      50% of your grade reflects your Clinical Performance as reflected by Shift evaluations.

 2.      25% reflects your performance on the Final On-line Examination.

 3.      25% reflects your attendance and participation at weekly Student Conference.
