CAREER MOBILITY IMPLEMENTATION
COMMITTEE MINUTES
CONFERENCE CALL, Sept. 7,2000
Members Participating: Sherry Fox, Ann Shuman,
Phyllis Rowe, Judy Peters, Karen Ormsby, Sandra DeBella
Discussion:
- List Serve. Fox will e-mail instructions
for subscribing to the list serve. The advantages of
using the list serve will be that information can be
distributed to the entire committee at once, with
opportunity for each individual's responses to be sent to
everyone. Additionally, others can subscribe and give the
committee input.
- Rowe raised concerns about the possible
opening of a new RN program by Concord Career Institute.
Additionally, San Joaquin Valley College in Visalia may
be opening an RN program. Concerns were expressed about
the implications for educational mobility if these are
proprietary programs that would not offer transferable
college credit, in the event the graduate chooses to
enter an RN-BSN program.
Ormsby will follow up with San Joaquin
Valley College to get proposed program details;
Fox will check with the BRN regarding new
program proposals and the approval criteria.
- Rowe suggested that a philosophy statement
could be generated by this committee, to be shared with
start-up programs, to deal with the issues of educational
mobility and transferable credit. NLN and AACN policy
statements on this issue could be used as models.
Ormsby will find NLN policy.
Fox will find AACN policy.
- An overall review of policies for LVN to
ADN and RN-BSN might be useful. We think we may have
begun this already, with a grid developed by Diane Welch.
- Sandra Debella reiterated the need to
examine roles and competencies of nurses working in
community settings. We could begin on differentiating AD
and BS roles, using the PHN essentials statements, and
building on work done by Sarah Keating about 10 years
ago. What is needed are current job descriptions, to be
sent to Sandra.
- Judy Peters will look for urban examples
of public health/community and clinic job descriptions
for AD and BSN nurses;
- Sherry Fox will look for rural examples.
- Sandra DeBella will obtain examples from
her suburban/rural agencies.
- Fox reported on plans for the joint AD-BSN
directors meetings to have a panel on innovative AD-BSN
collaboration.
- Fox reported on a statewide effort in CSU
system to align nursing prerequisites, with funding from
the CSU Chancellor's office. The first meeting will be on
Sept.14.
- Next conference call will be Oct. 5 at 9
AM.
