Student Interest Group
Medical students are able to form different Interest Groups at UCI and the Geriatrics Student Interest Group is a popular one:
- Members are medical students with a special interest in Geriatric Medicine.
- These students love to work with older adult patients or want to better familiarize themselves with this population.
- Geriatrics program faculty members help promote and facilitate many extracurricular activities of student interest.
- Students involved in this organization have applied and been selected for a variety of national educational opportunities.
Activities typically include:
- Hands-on clinical activities
- Get-togethers at a faculty member’s home
- Talks on how a young physician works with older patients
- Fall immunization clinic for older adults
- Group visits to community agencies that provide service to older adults (e.g. Braille Institute of Orange County)
- Conversation hours on what it's like being a new faculty member in the field
- Health Fairs for seniors
- Geriatric Fellowship opportunities
- Research and educational funding opportunities
Regular attendance is not required. There are no dues. This is a very relaxed and fun introduction to working with geriatric patients.
