Geriatrics for Medical Students
Overview
As baby boomers age, the need for physicians to know more about providing care to older patients is evident. Most students entering medical school will not initially aspire to be geriatricians. However, they soon learn that they will be working with older patients in their practices.
To better prepare them, the Program in Geriatrics introduces these students to the unique needs of older patients in a variety of ways. As students meet these older citizens and become more aware of the consequent challenges and rewards doing so, they often want to learn more, and several each year do aim to become geriatricians.
To increase students knowledge about working with older patients, the Program in Geriatrics:
- Mentors and provides lectures in the Clinical Foundations Course.
- Supports the Geriatric Interest Group.
- Offers Tag Alongs with geriatric care providers.
- Provides elective rotations in Geriatrics.
