Fellowship Overview
Description
The University of California, Irvine (UCI) Geriatric Medicine Fellowship is a comprehensive one-year training program that provides eligibility for a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Geriatrics and has been accredited since 1991. As an intimate program that hires 2 fellows per year, the fellowship affords considerable flexibility for the unique learning needs of each physician.
Goal and Objectives
The primary goal of the fellowship is to provide advanced training in the specialty of geriatric medicine. Graduates of the program will be able to:
- Develop expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems of older patients.
- Understand and know how to assess the impact of psychosocial issues on the well-being and quality of life of older patients.
- Develop expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems of older patients.
- Understand and know how to assess the impact of psychosocial issues on the well-being and quality of life of older patients.
- Know how to critically evaluate research results.
- Develop teaching skills for lectures and small group formats.
- Develop administrative skills.

- UCI Medical Center in Orange, including the SeniorHealth Center
- Gottschalk Medical Center in Irvine
- Veterans' Administration Medical Center, Long Beach.
- UC Irvine Medical Center affiliated subacute, assisted, and long term care facilities.
