Director's Welcome

The Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center—and its physicians, faculty, nurses, and staff—does its best to function as a family. We have many missions. One is to provide a receptive and familial atmosphere during one of the
most difficult times of our patients’ lives, when they have to bear the burden
of those three words: “I have cancer.” We are committed to providing state-of-the-art care to our patients. Our center is one of a kind in Orange County and we are proud of the research and subsequent treatment we are able to provide. We have celebrated many successes and know, more than ever, how very fortunate we are to be able to serve such an honorable mission that we hope will result in the prevention, early diagnosis, and a cure for cancer.
We owe much of our success to you—our patients, your families, and the greater community. We are thankful for the many friends, old and new, who have brought gifts of time, resources, and talents to the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center over the years. Without your support, our successes would not be nearly as great.
I’d like to share a story with you. “Never Let ‘Em Catch You with Your Bed Rails Down,” written by Sue Ruttenberg, one of our patients, will be useful to anyone undergoing a bone marrow transplant or intensive chemotherapy. I also encourage healthcare professionals to read her story—it will tell you a lot about why patients react the way they do and why they frequently perceive information differently than their doctors. Sue’s comments ring true and will bring tears of both laughter and sorrow. Sue has been there and conveys well what it feels like to face death and to survive with a hopeful and heartfelt attitude. Read it with joy in your heart.
