The most frequent diploid chromosome count for Hydra is 30 (Rahat et al., 1985, Experientia 41, 282-283). Recent counts from Hydra vulgaris showed 32 diploid chromosomes in all spreads, BUT the number of spreads was small and the number should be considered provisional (Shenk and Bengtsson, unpublished). Efforts to band cnidarian chromsomes have been made with Hydractinia and were largely unsuccessful, but it was possible to construct an ideogram using size and centromere locations (Shenk et al., unpublished). .
