Abraham Trembley's Memoires Concerning the Polyps

Abraham Trembley (pictured above) was the original hydra biologist. His experiments are described in his "Memoires Concerning the Natural History of a Type of Freshwater Polyp with Arms Shaped Like Horns." The Memoires have been translated from the original French into English by Sylvia and Howard Lenhoff (hlenhoff@uci.edu) under the title "Hydra and the Birth of Experimental Biology-1744."

Trembley did not include an index in the Mémoires. For the benefit of the modern reader, the Lenhoffs have prepared an index. Click here to obtain the index as a PDF file.

The Lenhoffs recently donated a first edition of Trembley's Memoires for display at the UCI Science Library.  For information on the donation and display, click here.
