The education and training of the next generation of neuroscientists is one of the primary missions of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology. Our graduate education program includes didactic coursework across the field of neuroscience, intensive and interactive seminar discussions, and ongoing journal clubs. Emphasis is placed on direct involvement in state-of-the-art laboratory research, and students are involved in research projects from the beginning of their graduate studies.

Faculty of the Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology take part in two larger graduate programs at UCI, the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program (INP) and the Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Biochemistry Program (MBGB). Both of these larger programs are essentially one-year gateway programs.

After the first year, which includes core coursework and rotations through several research laboratories, students choose a research area, and a faculty research advisor, and join the departmental graduate program.

For students interested in the broad field of Neuroscience, the INP will likely be the more appropriate program. Students seeking a strong molecular and genetic approach to the study of the nervous system may prefer the Neurobiology Track of the MBGB program.
